It throws if it sees contact info with any "call type" it doesn't understand. But it seems like some phones include new types of calls. According to: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5337987/unexpected-value-of-android-calllog-calls-type The types 4, 5, and 6 have been seen. In my contacts2.db there are two entries with type 5, and I'm pretty confident both were "refused" calls. I cannot find any actual documentation for these new call types, though. I hit this after restoring my call history using "Super Backup". The backup was made on a stock VZW ROM and then restored into a new 10.1.2 CM install. The contacts app immediately and always crashes. This means I cannot make any phone calls via the default 'phone' app. I think this function should at most log a warning and default to the "missed" icon. If you want to get a fancy maybe add a "I dunno" icon for displaying call types that are not understood? My workaround was to "update calls set type = 3 where type > 3;" on contacts2.db (or clearing the call history would presumably work, too).
