    Try setting windowActionBar to false with "<item name="windowActionBar">false</item>" or change Theme.AppCompat.Light.DarkActionBar to Theme.AppCompat.Light.NoActionBar in your styles.xml

    Your program is having trouble to find R.id.toolbar for the annotated toolbar. So, either your view id is wrong or it doesn't exist at all in the R.Layout.activity_main. If you meant for it to be optional, add the @Nullable notation!
